Papale - cv english

Paolo Papale began his research career after obtaining a Degree in Geological Science from Pisa University in 1990. After numerous research bursaries at the INGV and CNR, in 1996 he became a contract researcher at the CNR and subsequently, in 1999, researcher at the ING. In 2001 he won a public selection for Full Professor at the University of Calabria. As of 2003 he is Director of Research at the INGV. He has published some 50 scientific papers in ISI journals and has contributed to scientific books for an international audience on physical-mathematical modelling and numerical simulation of magmatic and volcanic processes, modelling of the thermodynamic and rheological properties of magma, and quantification of volcanic hazard. He has been involved in numerous European Community projects, and in national and international projects focusing on volcanic hazard and the physics of volcanism. He has taken part in scientific missions to active volcanoes in Italy, Ecuador, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Congo, and was member of the United Nations International Commission for the volcanic-tectonic crisis in the Nyiragongo-Lake Kivu region (Democratic Republic of Congo). He has coordinated (2005-2010) at the national level the volcanic hazard program commissioned by the Civil Protection Agency. He has been president of the GMPV Division (Geochemistry, Mineralogy, Petrology and Volcanology) of the EGU - European Geosciences Union (2007-2011). He is Chair of the Robert Wilhelm Bunsen Medal Committee, and member of the Arthur Holmes Medal & Honorary Membership Committee of EGU. He is member of the Academia Europaea, and Executive and Founding Editor of the EGU international journal Solid Earth. He currently coordinates the European project FP7 People – Marie Curie Initial Training Network 2012-2015 "NEMOH: Numerical, Experimental and Stochastic Modelling of Volcanic Processes and Hazard: an Initial Training Network for the next generation of European Volcanologists" (www.nemoh-itn.eu), and he is Principal Investigator in the European project FP7 Cooperation 2011-2014 "VUELCO: Volcanic unrest in Europe and Latin America: Phenomenology, eruption precursors, hazard forecast, and risk mitigation". He is the national responsible at the INGV for the specific objective Physics of Volcanism.
